The word Reiki is derived from two Japanese words - 'rei' meaning ' Universal spirit' and 'ki' meaning 'life force energy'.  Reiki is an ancient healing art which uses universal life force energy and seeks to restore order to the body whose vital energy has become unbalanced. The Reiki energy has several basic effects: it destroys energy blockages, brings about deep relaxation, detoxifies the system, provides new vitality in the form of healing universal life energy, and increases the vibrational frequency of the body. Because of its dualities of universal energy, it seems to have a basic consciousness which, when used for healing, is able to provide exactly what is needed on all levels . . . physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.  Reiki helps to create a harmonious environment within ones being so true healing can take place.

   There is no belief system or 'religion' attached to Reiki so anyone can receive a Reiki treatment.  The only prerequisite is the desire to receive the healing. The Reiki practitioner is not a healer; he/she is only a vessel through which the universal life force energy flows to the recipient.  Reiki is totally non-invasive.  The energy flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.  Reiki restores balance and enhances the quality of life.  Reiki therapy is also useful when you are recovering from an illness, surgery, chemotherapy, etc.., as it provides the body with extra life force energy, enabling you to bounce back more quickly.  Reiki does not take the place of conventional medical care and is not a substitute for medical treatment or diagnosis of a medical condition.  It is used as a supplementary therapy as it is a truly complimentary system of treatment.
